Arthur C. Nielsen was born in Denmark in 1887, but emigrated to the United States with his family at age ten. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and received his M.D. degree from the University of Chicago Medical School
He served as Chief Resident at St. Luke's Hospital, Director of the St. Luke's Hospital Medical Clinic, and Chief of Staff at St.
Luke's Hospital, Chicago, before accepting a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University Medical School in 1934. Dr. Nielsen was professor of pathology and director of the Institute of Human Biology for twenty-nine years until his retirement in 1968.
He died in 1973.
